NBC Orders Series of “Dr. Wolf,” a Zachary Quinto-Starred Medical Drama

NBC has greenlit the production of a long-awaited medical drama inspired by the renowned neurologist Oliver Sacks, known for his groundbreaking work in the field of neurology. The upcoming series, titled “Dr. Wolf,” follows the journey of the larger-than-life neurologist Oliver Wolf, portrayed by Zachary Quinto. Wolf and his team of interns explore the intricate complexities of the human mind, marking the last frontier in their quest for knowledge. Amid their fascinating explorations, they also grapple with personal relationships and mental health challenges.

This project, penned by writer and executive producer Michael Grassi and directed by executive producer Lee Toland Krieger, was the last pilot for 2023 awaiting a verdict from NBC.

The series is inspired by the writings of Oliver Sacks, particularly his acclaimed works “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat” and “An Anthropologist on Mars.” Sacks, a revered figure in the world of contemporary medicine, dedicated his life to unraveling the mysteries of unusual and perplexing brain disorders. His research provided a unique insight into human consciousness and advocated for a more compassionate approach to mental health and neurodiversity. Notably, his book “Awakenings” was adapted into the 1990 film starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams.

Several previous attempts were made to bring Sacks’ remarkable story to television. In 2019, Fox committed to a pilot inspired by Sacks’ work, led by Krieger, Alex Berger, and Fabrik Entertainment. In 2018, Fabrik collaborated with The Imaginarium on a Sacks drama. Sacks’ life was also the subject of a TV drama project with a script commitment at NBC in 2013.

Apart from Zachary Quinto, who previously held a series regular role in NBC’s “Heroes,” “Dr. Wolf” will feature Tamberla Perry, Ashleigh LaThrop, Alexander MacNicoll, Aury Krebs, Spence Moore II, and Teddy Sears.

The series will be executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman (Berlanti); Henrik Bastin, Melissa Aouate (Fabel); Andy Serkis, Jonathan Cavendish, Will Tennant (The Imaginarium); and DeMane Davis. Production will be a collaboration between Berlanti Productions, Fabel Entertainment, and The Imaginarium in association with Warner Bros. Television and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
